Making Tracks features rising stars Mokoomba
12 Feb 2014
With their enthusiastically eclectic mix of pan-African styles and Tonga rhythms, Mokoomba have propelled themselves into the vanguard of fresh new talent emerging from Zimbabwe, following in the footsteps of the Bundu Boys. With their album 'Rising Tide' they have intrigued and surprised music critics across the globe, and appeared at many festivals including WOMAD and on BBC TV’s Later with Jools Holland, as well as winning a whole ream of awards including, most recently, a Songlines Music Award 2013.
Mokoomba has been hailed as the most impressive band from Zimbabwe in recent memory, while the electrifying intensity of lead singer Mathias Muzaza has been described as a 'spinal experience'. A rollercoaster ride of raw energy & youthful passion.

Making Tracks: Daniel Melingo 10date UK tour!
05 Nov 2012
Sad, funny, intense, bizarre, fascinating… welcome to the quirky, twisted sweep of Melingo’s wry bohemian universe. In the early 80s he celebrated the sex, drugs and rock & roll lifestyle touring the world playing reggae, funk & rock. Then the 90s came and he discovered the musical roots of his home country: tango. His deep grouchy voice and his vividly sparse music well up from the world of tango in its early days. His insolent, anecdotal songs take the form of thriller-like daydreams, with swinging bursts, shady noises and the grating, almost Dada-like echo of the craziness of a world stumbling on its last legs. A true tango original.
The tour starts THIS WEEK: check out the tour dates here
Making Tracks: Krar Collective on nationwide tour
10 Sep 2012
Led by Temesgen Zeleke, a former star pupil of Ethiopian legend Mulatu Astatke, Krar Collective perform a rootsy yet contemporary take on traditional music from Ethiopia based on other-worldly modes and driven by hypnotic rhythms. The 6-stringed krar lyre is associated with the azmari minstrel tradition; in the hands of Zeleke it becomes a gritty, ancient rock guitar. Accompanied just by drums and fronted by the stunning, soaring voice of Genet Assefa, Krar Collective create a surprisingly big sound, leading one critic to name them ‘The Ethiopian White Stripes’. With a varied repertoire from gentle ballads to high-energy dance tunes, Krar Collective are set to surprise and delight wherever they go.
